dejected swan

Still unearthing a bunch of old work as a result of producing the dummy haiku book with Freeman. This started life as a diner placemat drawing in brown crayon. The full picture was of a large angry looking woman standing over the swan with her fists curled.  I copied the swan part and finished it as a pastel and then swiftly taped it into one of my style books. You can see the cellophane tape clearly crossing the image in a few places.

The drawing got a second treatment, again in pastel, this time all grey, which ended up in the haiku dummy.   Now the the place where the woman was is empty amorphousness and the swan has become a portrait of a man with a fur lined parka.  It’s being printed on it’s side but here it is properly oriented. If you can see the contour of the swan as the fur lining, the man’s face should jump out at you. It can be your a-ha moment for this ten minute segment.

The Octopus’s Garden In the Shade

The aforementioned Professor, as a child, on the very chalkboard which hadn’t been erased in over 15 but was erased this New Year’s Eve, drew this marvelous little world.  Gratefully her mother saw the virtue in the drawing and photographed it.

Below is one of my versions of the drawing, done on a placemat at a diner while we were eating with Aditya and Mary.

The Goofy Shoed Buddha

Friday of a long work week!  Spent all day on something for publication so I can’t even post what I accomplished.  And all those long hours today, and all those possibilities, I had plenty of thoughts about the variety in visual expression and the difference between an imagining and a finished drawing. But, as I said, long work day, too tired to say something worth reading.   Slated for tomorrow is finishing the demo for the second workshop activity based on Nick’s drawing (first one is here).

For now, the first of my placemats to be posted.  And I’m ashamed to say it’s not even a diner placemat.   I’m from Jersey, so if you’re from Jersey you know what I’m talking about, if not, I can’t explain. This placemat is from the ice cream shop Friendly’s.  We spent dinner every Sunday there the whole summer of 2007.  And I can tell you, they have the best crayons out of anybody.
